How I Went From Paralysed to Running in Six Weeks — And What It Taught Me About Recovery
I want to tell you the story of the six weeks that changed everything for me.
Not because I think my story is more important than yours. But because I've found that people who are told their situation is impossible need to know that impossible things happen — and more importantly, why.
2004: The Diagnosis
I was 24 years old when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
I was building a career, full of ambition, with a life stretching out in front of me that suddenly looked very different than it had the week before.
MS is unpredictable. It is progressive in many cases. And at 24, the range of possible futures my neurologist laid out was terrifying.
I did what high-achieving people do when faced with a frightening diagnosis: I researched everything. I followed every medical recommendation. I tried very hard to be a model patient. I took my medication. I modified my lifestyle. I showed up to every appointment.
And for a few years, things were relatively stable.
2009: The Attack
Then came the attack that paralysed me.
I won't pretend I remember the details the way I might remember a normal day. What I remember is the terror of losing function in my body over a slow, cruel ten days. The disorientation of tasks I had taken for granted — washing, feeding myself, moving through space — becoming monumental challenges.
And I remember the moment I was offered a probability: a 50% chance of ever walking again.
Fifty percent.
I chose to focus on the other fifty.
What I Did — Alongside Everything Else
I want to be really clear here.
I am not suggesting I refused conventional medicine, or that the approach I took is universally applicable. What I'm saying is that I became very interested in the layers that conventional medicine wasn't reaching.
I was brought up in a family that supported a balanced approach of Eastern and Western medicines. I knew intuitively and intellectually, that the body holds stress in ways that blood tests cannot measure. That the nervous system's state influences recovery in ways that are profound and largely unmapped by the medical model I was living inside.
So alongside my medical treatment, I went deep into the work on my nervous system, my energetic body, my emotional patterns, and the deeper layers of what my system had been holding. I studied Sports Kinesiology, and this taught me how to work with the places where fear had calcified into physical bracing. I addressed the accumulated stress of years of pushing through a diagnosis while trying to perform at full capacity. I had to learn how to give myself the best environment to maximise healing when the odds were stacked against me.
Modern medicine held one part. This deeper work held another. Together, they created something neither could have created alone.
Six Weeks Later
Six weeks after being paralysed, I walked out of rehabilitation under my own power.
An incredible neuro physiotherapist, Gavin Williams, helped his clients not just walk again — but run again. I was first in at physio and the last to leave. A woman on a mission to get out of a wheelchair.
My medical team was stunned.
When I was diagnosed, I was stressed. I thought only in worst-case scenarios, and I began to believe I might never achieve my goals in life. I was 29 years old, and I was devastated. That mindset led to more inflammation, more degeneration — and eventually, my paralysis.
I knew I had to change my mind and my approach about what I believed could be possible in order to get new results.
When my toe moved for the first time, I found hope. And I gave 150% to my care team, living in hospital for many months. At the time, it felt like a miracle had happened, and I was very lucky. But now, after 13 years in private practice and 16 years in remission — helping my clients overcome their autoimmune symptoms — I have discovered it was also a method.
What I Learned About Recovery
In the years since, I've thought deeply about what happened during those six weeks — and what it means for the people I work with.
Here is what I believe:
The body has a remarkable capacity for recovery when it is given the right support at the right level — and when every layer works together.
Not just at the physical level. Not just at the pharmaceutical level. But at the neurological, emotional, and energetic level too.
The medical system is extraordinary at many things. It kept me alive. It managed my inflammation. It monitored my condition with precision.
What it couldn't do was work with my nervous system's threat response, with the emotional and energetic accumulation of years of chronic illness, with the parts of my body that were bracing against further attack and needed to be shown it was safe to release.
That's what I did to heal — and it's what I've spent the last 13 years teaching others to do, always in partnership with their medical team, never in place of it.
The BAMBOO Method Was Born From This
Everything in the BAMBOO Method comes from the intersection of what I learned in my own recovery and what I've observed in over a decade of private practice.
It is not theoretical. It is built from the experience of a body that was told it couldn't recover — and did, because every layer of that body was finally supported.
Sixteen years later, I remain in full remission.
Not because of any single treatment. Because of an integrated approach — with every part of me supported, and with me at the centre of my own care.
If you are living with a condition that has been labelled chronic, progressive, or treatment-resistant — I want you to know that the label is not the limit.
There is always more that can be layered gently and thoughtfully into the excellent work you may already be doing.
