The Invisible Toll of Midlife Burnout


For many women in midlife, the pressure to “do it all” becomes a quiet but exhausting routine.

For decades, many women have carried an invisible burden, balancing careers, families, and societal expectations while quietly confronting workplace barriers and the relentless pressure to do it all. Over time, chronic symptoms such as daily headaches, severe insomnia, jaw clenching, and sudden weight gain are often dismissed as a natural part of menopause.

These symptoms may signal the cumulative effects of long-term stress, burnout, hormonal changes, or other underlying health concerns that deserve attention rather than dismissal.

For Laura, it took an 11-centimetre benign fibroid or what she calls her “stress baby,” to finally make her stop. In that moment, she realised her body had become the boundary-setter she could not be for herself.


True wellness requires listening to these physical warnings before a crisis forces your hand.

It is not selfish to step back, set boundaries, and reclaim your health. Prioritising yourself is not an indulgence; it is an act of self-preservation.


Laura’s story is a powerful reminder for women navigating the competing demands of midlife.

Listening to the body, acknowledging invisible labour, and creating space to rest are essential acts of care. It is not something to postpone until a crisis arrives but something we must choose, protect, and prioritise before our bodies are forced to speak for us.
